Is it Safe to use Kess V2 to Read/Write ECUs thru OBD?

The problem with some ECU’s, is that you can’t read them over OBD (except on some original/high priced tools) and for that reason you may need KTAG to read a full BDM, unlock TPROT (if it’s available), write the modifications back with KTAG and then you can use KESS over OBD to read/write.

Here’s how it works in 4 steps…
STEP 1: Plug KESS into car’s OBD-II port
STEP 2: Plug KESS into laptop’s USB port
STEP 3: Launch KESS software
STEP 4: Read/Write data to vehicles EEPROM ECU chip
What’s more, tuning/remapping is completely safe because you can backup and restore original ECU data back to car in 1-click.

MPPS is a very good tool and has Tricore support, but you need to open the ECU first as with KTAG.

If you don’t feel comfortable to open an ECU and connect with pogo pins using KTAG/MPPS, you can try the tools suggested by the others here, like:
1. PCMFlash + Scanmatik, that’s the best software available at this moment!
2. KTM Bench, it’s a copy of PCMFlash + Scanmatik hardware but you have all those copy/clone limitations (no updates, support etc).

1.The computer used for the device cannot be connected to the network, nor can the device be upgraded. if it be locked the factory will charge for repairs.
  1. The connection diagram is depend on the ecu model,Look at the model of the cpu chip for ecu select., select the software menu to read and write ecu, all 71 options ecu no need to open the ecu connection boot line. But you need to connect the GPT0 and GPT1 lines.

(For example, I removed  the ecu from the car is edc17 c54, then my ecu cpu is tc1797, connect the ecu according to the wiring diagram I provided, and do not open the ecu. According to this connection diagram, you must connect gpt0 gpt1 , the software chooses this 1797 cpu option)

The advantage of reading ECU without removing the cover:
1. Easy to operate, you can read the data in about 5-10 minutes without removing the ecu cover. Unpacking an ecu to see the technology and equipment, generally taking off the ecu is about 20 minutes or more, it is normal to remove the ecu cover more than one hour or destroy the ecu cover.
2. Unpacking the ecu destroys the original ecu sealing conditions.
3. Removing the ecu cover you need to connect to the boot point.
4. After reading the data, reseal the ecu.

(Solved) Ktag 6.070 Warning: Mandatory Update

ktag warning: mandatory update within the next 5 programming. connect the tool to the internet and run the update as soon as possible

Solution:
There are only 5 tokens left, so you need to reset tokens.

You need:
  1. Reset tokens for Ktag. 6.070 is the Unlimited tokens version, no need desolder chips.
    We add tokens programming software on the CD. Once tokens run over, follow our video to program tokens step by step. No need remove the token chip from the main board, no need desolder chips.
  2. If still not works, pls replace the TF card and reset tokens again.

VERY IMPORTANT:
DO NOT connect to the network!
Otherwise, you might have an issue of block and need send the machine back for repair.
Pls. check with Ktag you have and contact the support for methods to reset tokens

To use this protocol of communication you have to remove and open the ECU. It is a risky operation, to be done with great care and caution to avoid damaging the ECU beyond repair.
After opening the ECU and before proceeding with reading and/or programming, you are strongly advised to reconnect the unit to the vehicle and start the engine, to make sure it still works.
To use this protocol you also need to connect to the ECU connector through a cable, and solder one or more wires to the programming pads.
Incorrect or poorly made connections and solderings may damage the ECU, often beyond repair.
Under no circumstances we shall be liable for any damage caused to the ECU during the opening, due to connections and soldering that do not comply with the instructions provided in this manual.

Recommendation


Remove the ECU from the vehicle;
Open the ECU, taking care in not damaging the parts inside;
Reconnect the ECU to the vehicle and start the engine, in order to make sure that it is still working and has not been damaged in the opening;
Remove again the ECU from the vehicle;
Select the right plug-in;
Always make a backup copy of the ECU before Reading and / or Writing.

Remove the soldered wire before re-installing the ECU on the vehicle.

Step 2:
Select the right plug-in

Backup: To make a full backup of the ECU, select Backup in the Reading box and click on Read.

Reading: Remove the check mark at the Backup option, select the component you want to read and then click on Read.
Notice: The term Maps at the side of the component indicates where the maps for engine control are stored.

Writing: Remove the check mark at the Restore option, select the component you want to write and then click on Write.
Notice: The term Maps at the side of the component indicates where the maps for engine control are stored.

Restore: To restore the backup file to the ECU, select Restore in the Writing box and click on Write.

Read BMW M5 E60 EDC17 with Kess v2 or Galletto v54?

Purpose & problem:
I have been remapping a 2006 BMW M5 E60.
I have heard the MPPS is not suitable for this so decided to buy a better tool.
Not sure if I should go for a Galletto v54 or the Kess V2.
Any advice would be great, ideally I would like to get the one that covers most cars via OBD.

Advice from users:
  1. Kess V2 is better solution.

  1. EDC17 safer to do on the frame, and some only.
    KESS and GALLETTO it is a good.
    If you buy a fake you never know what to do, and if at all something impute.

  1. Galletto works well for boot mode tricore

  1. For me both tools are doing a good JOB – Kess is china clone but i have an original one aswell. just need to update is to Master – because at the moment is SLAVE.
    FG Galleto V54 is Euro Clone and until now it never ever let me down . Anyway… what i figure it out is that the tools are good and work good but the laptop configuration is quite important.
    I use panasonic toughbook CF 19 and CF 52. – Never had a single problem with both of them .

  1. Buy a good galletto clone “EU” and no problems, very stable.

  1. I use both, Kess v2 clone + Galletto v54 clone. But i prefer v 54 only because user fredliness and good working stability, no chance to suspend writing file or something else. Kess little bit fussy, and to much moronresistant and used only if V54 will not handle it but in plus a lot better for gasoline engines. V54 in 80% still needs rework after buying but after that works perfect

  1. Earlier Galetto didn’t support MSS65 K-line ( E6x V10 Mpower ) . It can only read by CAN which is only LCI E6x . Not sure about kess and the latest Galletto version . Someone can double check please . Some chinese says kess is not working good with K-line .
